TWO WEBPAGES YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT!

Two of my favorite local filmmakers have started up their own webpages, which you should check out now (RIGHT NOW! CLICK THE LINKS!)

First on the list is San Francisco mistress Nara Denning, who has a visual style that will haunt your dreams. She's also quite funny. Take a look here: WWW.NARADENNING.COM

Second is Hoku Uchiyama, whose work I have raved about before. I'm a bit biased, as we grew up together, but man! Watch out for him. His beautiful page can be seen here:WWW.HOKUUCHIYAMA.COM

BACON INTERVIEW ON "HORROR T.V"

Included below is an interview I did for this years BCM Horror Film Festival. I wasn't able to complete an actual film, so I just gave them the trailer for "Help Wanted". And they still let me do an interview! Very funny, with Berkeley's own Moby Theobald hamming it up like no one else can.

"TRUCK" is one of San Francisco's newer gay bars. Located right at the beginning of the Mission District and edge of Folsom Street, they have thrived on some pretty cool variety nights. Every Monday, they screen the Amy Sedaris classic Strangers With Candy, and follow it with local short films. This Monday, June 15th, they will be screening "Poster Boy" and "Bob".

As well, the following Monday, June 22nd, they will be screening "My Worst Nightmare"!

Both shows start at 9:30pm, and run late into the evening (morning). Show up, get a drink, and enjoy an evening's worth of bad taste!

NEW INTERVIEW ON "THE LAST DOORWAY" SHOW

This is an interview I did on Last Doorway Show back in September about "My Worst Nightmare". Also present is Judy Cerda, who plays my mother in the film, as well as a hapless hooker in the upcoming "Help Wanted".
The interview is by Reyna Young, who's also producing a documentary about Women In Horror, which should be great! Despite an obvious handicap, she also interviewed me for that project, although I don't know if I made the final cut.

Enjoy!

"WORST NIGHTMARE" Gets Review in BadLit.Com

Mike Everleth of Badlit.com has written a terrific review for "My Worst Nightmare". This may, in fact, be the best review ever bestowed upon me.

"BACONS WORST NIGHTMARE" Mike Everleth

""When it comes to creating sickening nightmares, it's hard to top San Francisco based filmmaker Waylon Bacon. His latest disturbing vision to hit the web is My Worst Nightmare, which is embedded above. Bacon's shorts are nightmarish odysseys. However, they're crafted with a genial, good humored vibe, which actually makes his films all the more disturbing. Although My Worst Nightmare takes place in just one location and clocks in at around seven minutes, this is an epic, freakish tale that riffs on a common nightmare: The idea of being buried alive. And while there are a few icky moments scattered throughout the short, the film is not nearly as grotesque as some of Bacon's previous work, like Maggots and Poster Boy. Yet, it still shines with the usual Bacon patina of unpleasantness. In other Bacon news, I continue to recommend his blog chronicling the making of his latest film, Help Wanted. While Bacon doesn't post all too frequently, when he does, they're very detailed posts about the highs and lows, hurrays and harumphs of making a low budget short film. I find it all very fascinating and probably the best film making of blog I've read. Now, I just can't wait to see the damn finished film."

NEW REVIEW UP AT SQUIDFLICKS.COM!

I just stumbled onto this the other day - at first I thought it was a review of my web page, but it's actually a review of my demo reel, which I was passing out at the Kentucky Horror Film Festival back in August. The problem is I don't remember handing out my demo reel to anyone from squidflicks! Go fig. Either way, click the link below, or just read on. Thanks!

SQUIDFLICKSREVIEW

"BOB" REVIEW:

"The short starts out with a very strange looking man walking around town. He seems to be very well known and one of those people who you just can't hate. After a series of "Hi Bob!!" from many other strange looking people (Such as a veteran, a hobo, a bag lady, business man, etc). Bob is then struck in the middle of the street, Killed upon impact. The driver of the car then looks back and then says "Sorry Bob." The thing that really gets you is that abnormal make up done by Shannon Burla, which is grade A."

"POSTER BOY" REVIEW:

"This short deals with a guy, who obviously isn't healthy due to the color of his skin, looking around his house for cigarettes. We learn he smokes ALOT based on the massive amounts of empty cigarette packs around his house. So he proceeds to go out and buy some more. After he purchases them and starts smoking them, the public notices him. They all start coughing and see he is the one causing them to do so. They start chasing him around the city until he makes it back to his house. Once he is inside he races to the bathroom and starts to smoke again. After he takes a few puffs he notices lines begin to appear around his jaw. All of a sudden it just falls off. His chasers come in and think he did it himself to stop smoking. He is praised and then made into the next billboard, this is what will happen to you if you smoke, kind of deal. Really unique piece here, and it would not have been anywhere near as good as it is without the score by Jason Miller. The incredible special effects continue as Shannon Burla, with Jeff Lanzaga and Ali Ulrich, show off more of their work."

"WORST NIGHTMARE" REVIEW

"This short was my favorite out of the whole group of them. I loved how it starts out in his dream, with him telling us about it in a voiceover. The fact that both his father and him were buried under two twin rosebushes is insane!!! He comes back and the ladies of the house, but they complain about how rude he was for coming back. They explained how it wasn't fair to them, since they've grieved and recovered already. With that said, he proceeds to go back to his rosebushy grave. This one shows more of the creative side of the twisted world of Waylon Bacon. Also there are plans for this short to be made into a feature length film, which I think would be amazing to see."

REVIEW ON BAD LIT!

Just got a GREAT writeup on badlit.com

Check it out!

"The occasion of this post is a screening Thursday Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. of the short films of filmmaker Waylon Bacon in San Francisco as part of the Vive le Rock indie music showcase at Mr. Smith's. Bacon's films will be showing in addition to performances by bands Gosta Berling and the Sleepover Disaster. More info on the show can be found here. However, if there wasn't a screening and I had stumbled on Bacon's shorts in some other fashion, I'd be posting them up here anyway. I'm a new fan. Previously, Bacon's name only pops up on Bad Lit as a regular at the San Francisco Underground Short Film Festival, but his stuff really needs to be seen in a wider venue than that. The above embedded film, Maggots, is just brilliant. It's the kind of film that even though I know it has a written by credit for Bacon, I don't know if the story told by this cranky Vietnam vet is true or not. Click it, watch it and stick with it. It's one of the grossest things I've ever heard. Bacon really knows the power of the payoff. Gross is pretty much the running theme through the three shorts of his I've watched so far on his website. But none of the films start off that way. They have a slow build that only exacerbates the uneasiness one feels when the disturbing parts come. These are very bold little films in kind of a subdued way. I'm only embedding two shorts, so that this page loads faster. The short film Bob is a bit of a trifle and I can see it becoming a popular viral video if enough folks get clued into it. I recommend going to watch it, but I want to focus on Bacon's more ambitious projects here. So, that's why Maggots is above and Poster Boy is below. Poster Boy is the way more ambitious film. It has a great look and a truly revolting special effect that makes the last couple minutes almost unbearable to watch. But, extremely funny and well done. And if you like these shorts, you can visit Bacon's website to either watch more and/or check out his haunting paintings."

THREE FILMS SCREENING AT "VIVE LEROCK!"

On Thursday, Sept. 18th, I'll be screening three short films between sets by two fantastic, local bands at the second installment of "Vive LeRock!", in which local bands and local filmmakers get to play side by side for an evening! Gosta Berling, who organized this thing, will be there, and are well worth checking out; www.gostaberling.com they have a great, spooky sound, and almost all narrative, which I love. The sleepover disaster is also playing. I'm not as familiar with them, but I like what I've heard (their song "Oceanographer" reminds me of lonely nights spent walking around S.F). And I won't plug my own stuff because, well...that would just be foul. But check it out!! I really like what these guys are trying to do, and am really flattered that they thought of me. Hope to see you there! For more info, check out the groovy poster they sent me below...

RADIO INTERVIEW ON PIRATECAT

On wednesday, August 6th, myself and fellow filmaker Greta Schoenberg were featured on Mister Odom's Bottomless Pit, featured on Pirate Cat Radio, to promote the upcoming Mission Underground Film Festival, being held TONIGHT!We talked about filmmaking, obscure music, and the mating habits of 25oo year old reptiles. Check it out here. The show might take a second to load because it runs two hours, but they play some fantastic music by X Ray Sepx, Sonic Youth, and Wall Of Voodoo, so stick around. The M.U.F.F Festival will be held at Pirate Cat Radio, lcoated at 2781 21st Street at Florida in San Francisco's Mission District. Show starts at 8:00pm, and is only five bucks! Tonight they will be featuring my short film "Intellectual Cuisine". Hope to see you there!

"MY WORST NIGHTMARE" AT S.F UNDERGROUND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

"My Worst Nightmare" has been accepted into it's fourth festival, the inimitable S.F Underground Short Film Festival, hosted by Peaches Christ. This will mark the third year in a row I've played there, and she was really the first festival in town to champion my shorts. As well, Jason Miller, who composes all my scores, and starred in "My Worst Nightmare", will be screening "The Story Of Grizmas", about a little known German Holiday. I was conned into playing a Lizard Man for it.

S.F UNDERGROUND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL will be held at The Bridge theatre, located at 3010 Geary Blvd., one mile west of Japan Town, on August 22nd.

Frightnight banner

I'm very happy to announce that "My Worst Nightmare" has been accepted into the 4th annual FrightNight Film Festival, held in Louiseville, Kentucky.
The Festival will take place August 15th - 17th, and is part horror convention, part independent horror film festival. Attending the convention will be Angus Scrimm, the "Tall Man" from the Phantasm series, Kane Hodder, who has played Jason Vorhee's for most of the "Friday The 13th Series", and Teri McMin, the unfortunate girl who is hung on a meat hook in the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"! Very cool. I now have to find funds so I can fly out there. Who'd have thought I'd ever have an excuse to fly out to Kentucky?

WAYLON MARATHON AT THE S.F MUFF FESTIVAL

Hey all, one of my favorite local filmmakers, Nara Denning, is putting on a film festival in the mission, called MUFF (Mission Underground Film Festival...what did you THINK it stood for, you pervert?), which will be featuring FOUR of my short films.
MUFF will be benefiting Pirate Cat Radio, a great underground radio station broadcasting to S.F and L.A. There used to be a time when disc jokey's played anything they felt like, which is how little things like Rock and Roll reached the masses. This is of course, a thing of the past, which is why we all need to go out and support these great people.
The fest will run one night each month of summer, kicking off June 5th.

The films of mine playing will be:

POSTER BOY - June 5th
BOB - June 5th
MY WORST NIGHTMARE -June 5th
INTELLECTUAL CUISINE - Aug. 7th

I hope to see you all there! Admission is DIRT CHEAP ($5 bucks!), and all the featured filmmakers are fabulous.

Click this link to see some of Nara Denning's films, one of which, Madalien the Small, will be playing July 10th at the fest.

I'M UP FOR A GRANT!

Hey! This is neat! The
SF WEEKLY, one of our three local free papers, is having a contest called the "Masterminds Grant", in which they will select four artists from the area, and grant them 2,500 bucks, as well as giving them a write up in the paper. I had given them a demo reel, a cover letter, and some postcards from this webpage a few weeks ago, not expecting anything to come of it. And lo and behold, they called me on Friday to let me know that I'm one of the top fifteen finalists!! I get a mention in the paper this week, and have an invite to "artopia" over in North Beach, where they will select the final four winners. I'm not crossing my fingers, but am very flattered to be included. To check out the article, click HERE. The final four will be announced at a bar called Mojito, on Thursday, March 27th, at 1337 Grant Ave in North Beach, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm, and as far as I know there is no cover. All righty then. Off to work. Waylon

The screening will be October 20th, at the Berkeley Community Media Center in Berkeley, located at 2239 Martin Luther King Jr.Way, in Berkeley CA. Tickets are $12 in advance, and $15 at the door. Comics, is proud to announce the launch of the
groundbreaking online comic book, NIGHT WARRIOR.

Created by Phil Hobden, along with Ross Boyask and
Alan Scott, NIGHT WARRIOR is a dark, brooding
arc-based story with a community and expanded universe
unlike anything seen online before.  With a martial
arts based vigilante theme, NIGHT WARRIOR takes its
influence from legendary books like 'Sin City' and
'Batman,'  not to mention the cinema of 'Hong Kong'
from the likes of Takashi Miike, Ringo Lam and John
Woo.

With artwork from respected and upcoming artists such
as Matt Skilton , Mute Ant, Casey Maloney and Charles
Reid, and stories written by Tom Waltz (CHILDREN OF
THE GRAVE, Shooting Star Comics), Paul Burke, Fred and
Mary Pullen and Chris Regan,  NIGHT WARRIOR is a truly
international project with talent from all corners of
the globe.

The first season boasts almost 20 individual 22-page
comic books, based on 8 stories, and is set to run for
a minimum of 5 seasons. For the “Story so far…” please
visit the website at www.nw-comic.co.uk.

Pilot Issue: ‘Deadly Jade’ Part 1 launches the comic
on the 1st December 2004.

The five-part pilot story, 'Deadly Jade,' pits Jeff
'Night Warrior' Winters against the criminal
underworld of the fictional Metro City, including his
first deadly encounters with the Big Bosses that rule
the streets.

When a new designer drug is unleashed on the streets,
vigilante Jeff Winters, dubbed 'Night Warrior' by the
press, has to take on the ruthless Jack Savage and his
gang the 'Tiger Claws' and the devious Asian druglord
Li Chen, all the while fending off interest from
intrepid local reporter, Kirstin Cooke, Metro PD
Detectives Jamison and Jenkins, aggressive Hong Kong
cop Kano LaRoux, and a huge, hulk of a man nicknamed
Lion.

In addition to the arc-based stories, NIGHT WARRIOR
will be backed up by the expanded universe 'Night
Warrior: Chronicles', which will include short 'pulp'
fiction stories and strips, mini-comic books,
animations, radio plays and short films.

NIGHT WARRIOR launches to the world (and world wide
web) on: 1st December 2004 16:00 GMT at www.nw-comic.co.uk.
